Kennedy Voices Support for Belmont Street Road Project

Last night, Senator Kennedy had the privilege of being a main testifier at a very important hearing of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Engineering Division, held at Brockton City Hall. There, he gave his full support for a planned redesign and rebuilding of Brockton’s Belmont Streets (Route 123) from Manley Street to Edinboro Street.  If completed, the proposal would result in major improvements in traffic flow, left-hand turn corridors, the widening of travel lanes, the creation of a four-foot wide shoulder, and a complete rebuilding of traffic signaling along the street.

The project has an estimated preliminary price of $3.3 Million with 90% of the costs covered by the federal government, and 10% being covered by the Commonwealth.

Kennedy, a long-time advocate for the widening of that particular stretch of Belmont Street told the panel their proposal was welcomed with open arms.

Previously, while Vice-Chair of the Massachusetts House Committee on Ways and Means, Kennedy had obtained substantial funds for a similar project in a transportation bond bill that then-Governor William Weld failed to implement.
